Smiling Canines is proud to provide the service of non-anesthetic teeth cleaning for dogs and cats. Our trained technicians clean your pets teeth directly under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. It is our policy to always conduct a thorough exam to assure your dog or cat is a candidate for our service.
Oral & Medical Exam
It is the owners responsibility to disclose the medical history of their pet. This will then be reviewed along with an oral health exam to see wether your pet is a candidate. If for some reason they are not, there will be no charge. Your technician will discuss the reasoning and additional options for your pet.
Positioning & Stress Reduction
It is our goal to make each and every pet in our care feel safe, secure, and calm. We know you love your animals and assure you we will treat them with the same kindness and respect. Most large & medium sized dogs are placed gently on their side on a soft surface, while smaller dogs and cats are swaddled in a clean towel. Both of these techniques are used to give security and prevent injury. Your pets stress level is monitored throughout the procedure. If at any point it is felt your animals stress levels are too high we will stop the procedure.
Your Pets Dental
After a thorough oral examination is complete your pet should feel more relaxed and your technician will begin the dental cleaning. The procedure first starts with a hand scaler to assess the health & integrity of each tooth and chart all identifiable periodontis and oral imperfections. This includes all missing, loose and fractured teeth, discoloration and enamel defects. We also identify feline oral lesions, periodontal pocketing, gingival recession and overgrowth (hyperplasia). You will receive a copy of your pets oral exam to save in their medical records.
Ultra Sonic Scaling
An ultra sonic scaler is a power driven scaler used by your pets hygienist. These scalers vibrate at a high frequency and have linear tip movement. The vibrations and movements from the ultrasonic scaler crush calculus, disrupt bacteria & biofilm and remove stain. These scalers are great for flushing under the gum line and in between the teeth. They are also less invasive on the enamel. Just like humans, some dogs and cats are sensitive to this type of cleaning and don’t tolerate it well. It is our goal to use the ultrasonic scaler, but if it is too stressful, your hygienist will hand scale, flush the gum line, and polish.
Each and every dental cleaning, no matter how careful, cause minor micro abrasions ( or etching) to the tooth’s enamel surface. Polishing smooths out the defects and removes the non intrinsic staining as well as excess tartar remaining after the dental scaling. Your technicians are sure to polish each pets teeth. After the dental is complete we rinse your dog or cats mouth with an oral solution that contains 0.12% Cholhexadine to decrease bacteria remaining in the mouth. Your pet is returned feeling fresh and ready to go home!!
